Birthday. I planned to celebrate it with a Bang! . . . being my first Birthday celebration here in the U.S.A. but how to do it was my problem. We have
wife. After an intense brainstorming with my wife, she came up with a suggestion:
Yes! Yes! That’s a novel idea! I’ll make preparation for it . . . I replied. The first thing I did was to make a check list of the necessary equipments needed for my home video conferencing system. Video Conferencing Equipments and Systems Based from my checklist, I need the following:
After a week’s preparation, the Verizon High-speed Internet access was installed and I purchased 1 piece LinkSys Cable/DSL router, 1 piece VGA connector. I installed the LinkSys software and downloaded the Yahoo! Instant Messenger to my laptop computer. Video Conferencing Equipments Rental I browsed the Internet for companies renting TVs, Projectors, Laptop and other electronic equipments in our locality. One company’s rate (the cheapest) is as follows:
equipments for such a simple get together. And besides, first time customers are subject to a deposit of up to 100% of the value of the equipment for the rental period which I can not afford. So, I scrapped the idea. Luckily, when my wife started inviting our friends and after learning of our problem, one was willing to lend her LCD Projector and projector screen and another one, her Dell Inspiron Laptop overnight. I was hesitant at first to accept their offer but I had no otherchoice. Anyhow, I assured them that their equipments will be in good hands. Now, everything is ready. On the other hand, I invited our love ones in Central Visayas, Philippines to join my online Birthday Party. I explain to her the mechanics on how to do it. Mom was very excited to hear about it. I’ll invite our relatives and friends and prepare a lechon (roasted piglet), some party delicacies, and a birthday cake for the reception. She also tells Dad to set up our home video conferencing system. Be sure to start at 7:30 o’clock in the morning and be reminded that it should be a day ahead of my birth date and please tell Dad to contact me at 7:00 A.M. sharp.
situated in an Island adjacent to Bohol Island. By the way, Bohol is the place of the world famous Chocolate Hills, White Beaches of Panglao Island, Scuba Diving resorts and the Tarsier, one of the the smallest monkey in the world. This is where my parents reside and my home place. I instructed her to do what I told Mom. She was also excited to join and prepare something for the occasion and invite some of our friends. Her hubby will set up their home video conferencing system.
A day before the Big Day, we went to the Mall to order the B-day cake to be picked up the following day. We also shopped for the preparations such beef, pork, spices and red and white wines. My wife knows how to cook and she’ll prepare all the Pilipino entrée tomorrow. My two boys were very eager to witness the affair. As usual we started the Big Day by hearing the early morning mass to praise and thank the Lord for the blessings and good health. Then we went to the Mall for breakfast and picked up the Birthday cake that we ordered. Back home, our super cook lost no time preparing the Filipino dishes for the evening. I also started setting up our home video conferencing system and prepare the venue for the evening’s affair. First, I placed the projector screen at the center wall of our living room. The Epson PowerLite 2000 lumens Projector was strategically placed overhead so that it will not be blocked by the heads of the visitors and connected it to my HP pavilion Laptop using the USB Connector cable. To get a wider view of our activities, I connected my Canon digital Camera to the USB port of my Laptop instead of using the usual Webcam and of course the Canon software was already installed to my Laptop. For audio connections, RCA cables were used to connect from the headphone jack of my Laptop computer to the audio input of the home stereo system, left and right. What we will see from the projector screen and hear from the audio system are signals coming from Mom’s home video conferencing system. At the same time we will send signals coming from this unit to their system. We will use our friend’s Dell Inspiron laptop to send signals to my sister’s home video conferencing system with the wireless webcam for video and wireless headset for audio. At the same time we see and hear their signals thru my CRT TV connected to the Laptop with the VGA connector cable. Simultaneous viewing from 3 distant points all over the world was achieved through online home video conferencing. At exactly 7:00 P.M., signals from the Bohol and Cebu were coming in simultaneously. Both venues are now ready with their guests. We could see our relatives and friends. They all greeted me a very Happy Birthday! Their virtual presence made us very happy on my extremely memorable birthday. Happy Birthday To You! My visitors started arriving and at 7:30 P.M. We started our dinner party and at the same time breakfast party in the Philippines. I introduced my guests to each other in virtual reality. My Dad led the prayer and they both sang together the Happy Birthday Song. Blowing of the candles followed next and I heard a deafening applause from everybody. I thanked them so much for their best wishes and for their virtual presence on my birthday. As we ate, we seemed to share the Filipino dishes available from the 3 tables like fried chicken, pork barbeque, pork “adobo”, chow mien, beef steaks, etc., except for the “Lechon” which was missing on our table. Someone shouted to please pass the lechon to us here and that aroused a very loud laughter among everybody. There was so much jubilation! And not to be overlooked, there was a Birthday cake in every table. I cut the cake and served to everyone simultaneously as they did also in the Philippines. Then we served the red and white wines. In the Philippines they served coconut wine and Tanduay Rum. We had a toast for prosperity, good health and wishes for many more birthdays to come. We held a short program after the sumptuous meal. We sang and danced until the wee hours although it was still 11:00 A.M. in the Philippines and they continued the celebration until after lunchtime. My guests bade good-bye and thanked me and my family for such a once in a lifetime experience. Yes!
